International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Declared an international day by the United Nations

December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities since 1992 when it was declared by the United Nations General Assembly.

Disability is a concept that evolves over time. It has changed from a biomedical and rehabilitative model where they focused only on the vision of the difficulties that people experienced due to their health situation to a social model that contemplates the individual not as an isolated form, but in his interaction with the society in which he lives.

Definition of disability

 December 3, disability day

From this perspective, the WHO defines Disability as a general term that encompasses impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions. Deficiencies are problems that affect a body structure or function; activity limitations are difficulties in executing actions or tasks , and participation restrictions are problems with participating in vital situations.

Therefore, disability is a complex phenomenon that reflects an interaction between the characteristics of the human organism and the social context.

What are international days for?

The objective of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is to promote the rights and well-being of people in all areas of society, as well as raise awareness about their situation in all aspects of political life, social, economic and cultural.

In this way, improve the situation of people with functional diversity, in addition to the search for equal opportunities .

A day for all

Every year there is a motto for this day. Last year it was “Empowering People with Disabilities”. This year is: «A day for all» , with which we want to reflect that disability is part of the human condition.

According to the UN, approximately one in seven people lives with some type of disability and this figure is expected to increase as a consequence of the aging of the population and the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

We can all experience a temporary or permanent disability at some point in our lives and society has to be prepared.

An opportunity for awareness

The International Days give us the opportunity to raise awareness on topics of great interest , such as sustainable development, health or human rights.

This is a day to raise awareness about the different capacities that people have, which is really what must be valued in a person. And of course work for the inclusion and non-discrimination of all people.

From Volem Valencia we are clear that we must continue to move towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable world for all people. That is why we work for tourism for all people through our routes experiences inclusive by the Valencian Community.
